Advantages of the MAPA®

Elastic Mandibular Advancement Appliance

Elastic Mandibular Advancement Appliance

The EMA (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) is a custom-made removable intraoral appliance created for noninvasive treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The appliance is designed to both advance the lower jaw (mandible) and open the bite to allow for less restricted airflow during sleep.

EMA appliances help promote a deeper, more restful sleep by preventing snoring and relieving the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The EMA does not interfere with breathing through the mouth, even in cases of congested nasal passages. The EMA has many options for patient advancement with 9 strap lengths and 4 different elastic tension options. Non-restricted side-to-side (lateral) or front-to-back (protrusive) movements of the jaw are possible while wearing the appliance due to varying elastic bands.

There is a protective reflex that prohibits the body from placing too much pressure on the anterior teeth. Thus, the body reduces the forces applied to the teeth when only the anterior teeth contact.

Pittman Dental Laboratory recommends the use of a MAPA for all TMJ / TMD / Bruxism related cases. You can find more about the MAPA, here.

EMG (Electromyogram) Studies support that Anterior Deprogrammers work best in patients who are chronic severe clenchers or bruxers. Severe bruxers may not have complete resolution of all muscle symptoms. There is evidence that there are individuals who keep their teeth together at all time, not just when swallowing. These individuals are chronic bruxers or clenchers that can be treated with a definitive anterior deprogrammer, with a high degree of success.
